Western Shelter Systems

The addition of a tent -city facility completes what is claimed by Professional Protection Systems to be the most comprehensive emergency response equipment portfolio available anywhere in the world. Under the GateKeeper™ trademark this new US system sourced by PPS represents the ultimate solution to the emergency surge capacity problem that follows in the wake of any incident whether it be caused by terrorism, virus or natural catastrophe.

According to PPS Managing Director, Mark Whitcher, PPS has been able to offer a highly sophisticated and varied range of first response facilities for some time, ranging from single use inflatable decon-showers for the Hazmat incident to large metal frame decontamination systems designed to handle hundreds of casualties every hour. This has all been complimented by a range of products, including floors, lights, heaters and PPE that have allowed for accessorisation on a scale that has enabled specifiers to customise their products to a remarkable degree.

What was missing from this armoury was a technology that could provide emergency surge capacity. “We felt it has to be cellular” says Whitcher, “Something that could be stand alone but infinitely expandable”. PPS claim they have found this in the GateKeeper™ system.

These shelters share common standardised components enabling them to be connected together to create large environmentally-secure complexes. “They offer the user a sophisticated tent city” says Whitcher. “Their unique expandability means that a facility can be precisely configured to the users needs and all units connect via vestibules”.

Offering a clean, climate-controlled and safe medical environment these units feature self-standing frames made from aircraft grade aluminium producing six-foot vertical side walls allowing all floor space to be fully utilised. Erection time per unit is about 20 minutes with a four person crew and once up, with proper staking they can stand 80mph winds.

The most popular unit sizes are the 19’ x 35’ stretched-octagon and the 20’ diameter octagon and they come with a whole host of accessories like work stations, desks and shelves that can be installed at any wall segment and fold into a single easy-to-carry unit. The units can also incorporate integral floors windows and doors, electrical distribution and water handling systems, negative/positive pressurisation and isolation options. They are also easily disposed of if contaminated.

PPS has already obtained the first order for one of these units – to act as home for an expedition to Central Asia
