PPS Blue Light Products Get Green Light From Public and Private Sectors

One of the positive results of the manufacturers’ response to the challenges posed by the threat of terrorist inspired CBRN incidents has been a massive increase in number and quality of so-called Blue Light products and services. One of the companies leading this particular charge is Professional Protection Systems. Providers of mass decontamination systems to the UK Government and to the National Health Service, PPS equipment is also in regular use by emergency services all over the world.

Since the end of WW2, this sector has rarely generated so much fervent creativity with so many new products and materials coming into use.

“This Renaissance has been spurred not just in response to a terrorist threat but also by the need for an ever more swift response to Hazmat incidents in processing plants or on highways etc” he says “It´s also being driven by a continued intensification of health and safety concerns”.

According to Allen the PPS lead in this area began in 1996 with the development of an inflatable PVC decontamination unit for use in the pharmaceutical industry. The successors of this system today is an inflatable or articulated metal frame with the choice of dozens of different accessories, allowing for a hitherto unheard degree of customisation. One factor that is common to all this vast raft of different products, that have evolved from the first inflatable shower of 10 years ago, is the speed with which they can be made ready for action. This is because they are designed for use where, almost invariably, speed of response is the key to closing down an incident successfully. This same principle has now been extended to a wider range of products, some involving carbon-fibre technology. These include scene of crime screening and shelters, command posts and even mobile A+E units.

With the increasing concern for the dignity of the individual that is currently taking the fore in NHS hospital and ambulance trust thinking, the state of the art decontamination unit produced by PPS offers the optimum conditions for protecting patient modesty via dedicated screening and shelters.

One of the major new areas of interest is that of communications products. Again, this has been evolved by PPS in the UK as a direct result of being the number one designer and supplier of air-fed suits. Improving communications for operatives wearing these suits has always been a number one preoccupation. The knowledge gained via this route is now being shared with police and ambulance services and, most recently, the coastguard. PPS favour the products of the Canadian Con-space organisation and we are supplying their systems to commercial customers as well as the emergency services. “Con-space systems address a lot of problems” says Allen. “Some of the biggest problems facing emergency services personnel include how to stay in contact with the rest of the team, how to make contact with the casualties created by an incident, prior to rescue, and how to keep and stay in contact with possibly frightened people being put through a mass decon unit. Now we have got the answer for practically every situation” Allen concluded.
