CUSTOMER FOCUS IS KEY TO PPS SUCCESS

In the past 12 months, since an MBO transformed it from being a subsidiary company of one of the world’s largest packaging manufacturers into one of the world’s leading independent designers and manufacturers of decontamination technology, Professional Protection Systems has become a totally customer-focused organisation.

According to PPS Managing Director, Mark Whitcher, the company had until the MBO a very strong manufacturing bias with customer care coming second. This was the result of history he says. PPS was founded in 1945 by two former government scientists to exploit unique welding technology developed during the war for peace

time purposes. “Being highly individualistic technical men our founding fathers, almost certainly unwittingly, created a tradition whereby the organisation was manufacturing rather than customer led” he says.

That is no longer the case. There is still the same emphasis on manufacturing excellence and PPS has made significant investments in the latest computer aided design and manufacturing systems this year, but at the same time it has exponentially expanded its training and equipment maintenance programmes, embracing both private and public sectors.
It has also initiated the PPS Decon Forum, a rolling series of meetings addressed by leading speakers in the decon and terrorist response sectors providing an arena in which senior personnel in emergency services can express their concerns and exchange information. The company has also developed what must be one of the most comprehensive facilities in the world for the design and manufacture of customised technology and PPE.

The latter has only been achieved by working closely with customers and end users to produce exactly what is required. To do this PPS has also converted itself into a one-stop accessory sourcing organisation. “I think we offer one of the widest ranges of accessories offered by any manufacturer” says Whitcher. “Because we export to 53 countries and have a network of agents throughout the world we are in a unique position to target the best for our customers, whether it be for raised flooring for a decontamination shower, a water heating unit, breathing air purifiers- you name it we source it.” says Whitcher.

The quality of the PPS product is reflected in the company’s customer list, which includes organisations as diverse as the Japanese Defence Agency, the French Government ,the Hong Kong Fire Service, Glaxo Smithkline, 3M, British Nuclear Fuels and the Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital.

One of the biggest PPS customers currently is the UK Government. Two years ago PPS won the contest to supply the British Health Service with the UK’s first mobile decontamination shower. This was a variant of the company’s revolutionary range of inflatable showers that have become core business in recent years and were originally introduced for use by emergency services at hazmat incidents. This year PPS won the British Government contract for supplying mass decon units as part of a massive investment in terrorist response facilities. Second generation units these depart from the inflation principle to be based on a mechanical frame technology. Smaller versions of these units are now available for private sector use

At a time when there is so much focus on the war against terror and terrorist response scenarios it is inevitable perhaps that the PPS PPE programme is a little overshadowed. Besides producing a range of decon-incident suits the company is one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of air-feed suits and the leading supplier of PPE to the British nuclear industry. Besides air fed and nuclear suits the PPS range includes chemical splash suits, respiratory suits and hoods, breathing apparatus suits, external breathing apparatus chemical splash suits as well as air line fed and half suits.

The company attaches equal importance to its knowledge as well as its manufacturing base and is ensuring that it can continue to deliver its customers leading edge technology not just via its own large R&D programme but via strategic alliances with other global players like leading US materials manufacturer, Kappler and TVI who are major suppliers of decon technology to the US military.
