PPS NEWS PPS History Today one of the world’s leading designers and suppliers of front-line decontamination technologies, Professional Protection Systems, began life in 1945 as a company created for the peacetime exploitation of unique PVC welding technology developed as part of the war effort. The first products were light weight protective garments such as fold-away PVC rainwear and items like cycling capes. Towards the end of the 1950’s the company underwent the first of several dramatic transformations that were to move it towards its present position of world-class player, when it won the contract to provide the UK’s new nuclear power industry with protective suits made to, what were then, unprecedented standards. |

From the invaluable knowledge gained through this
ground breaking opportunity, and by utilising new
materials coming onto the market , PPS rapidly became
not only the UK leader in nuclear suit production
but in air fed suits generally, supplying PPE for
use in a variety of hazardous environments. It was
during this period that PPS was commissioned the produce
the Ice Warriors’ suits
for Dr.Who, and like Dr.Who himself the company has
always had an ability to transform itself when needs
required. This was demonstrated by the introduction by PPS of the first inflatable decontamination shower unit in 1996. Originally designed for the swift treatment of casualties or PPE at a Hazmat incident it went global when Japan’s emergency services decided to equip themselves with PPS units in the wake of the Tokyo Sarin incident. Today this equipment can be found in use all over the world and a PPS inflatable is the standard unit for the NHS, hospital trusts and some fire and ambulance services. Similarly the mass-decontamination systems needs of HM Government are also met by PPS. These are articulated metal frame rather than inflatable but enjoy the same characteristics of swift deployment. Last year, in a typical ground-breaking move, PPS announced the introduction of a mid-decontamination unit. Manufactured from a large component of rubberised material it sits between the two concepts – offering greater longevity than the traditional inflatable but a considerable cost saving on a metal frame. There is no other company in the world able to offer these alternatives. Indeed over the past 10 years PPS has focused a lot of time and effort on putting together an accessory range, assembled from the world’s best, embracing everything from water heaters to lights, from flooring to communications systems, which enables the user to specify a customised product. This development reflects the PPS philosophy that the old customer-supplier relationship is gone. In its place a partnership is emerging with PPS playing the role of consultant, advisor and responder to its partners’ needs. |
