giant Nampak, PPS has established itself as a world leader in the supply of
decontamination equipment. In the UK the company won the contract to supply the mass decon units that are at the core of the UK government’s £53m New Dimension Programme run by the Civil Resilience Directorate. According to Whitcher this has had a very positive knock-on effect in the 50 countries to which PPS exports. Sales have been developing well in Europe and the company has recently secured a £1.6m contract from the Italian government for decontamination equipment as part of its terrorist response programme. To better service Europe the company has established a sales office in Cologne and manufacturing facilities in the Czech Republic. According to Whitcher the PPS-Kappler link-up in Mexico will give the company’s products a similar presence in the NAFTA countries, USA, Mexico and Canada “This new capability gives us global clout” he commented. Initially PPS will be utilising 25,000m2 of manufacturing space and employing a work force of up to 50 people in Mexico. “This will have the effect of doubling the productive capacity of our existing organisation by marrying the manufacturing skills of both companies under one roof with a view to supplying the whole NAFTA Homeland Defence Market”. The first project to be undertaken by PPS/Kappler at Jerez will be a new inflatable decontamination shower designed especially for the needs of the American market. Making it clear that this development was in no way a preliminary to moving the business out of the UK but rather the first step in giving PPS a global manufacturing presence Whitcher says “our order books are impressive by any standards and we need everybody we have at our Milton Keynes site, as well as in the Czech republic, just to meet our current UK and European obligations. This is why our new Mexican operation is essential to realising our growth plans globally”. |
