December 2002 - PPS INTRODUCE TERRORIST INCIDENT SAFETY SHELTERS FOR PRIVATE SECTOR

For the first time in the UK private companies will have access to safety shelters designed to protect their staff if their operations are subjected to a chemical or biological terrorist incident. The range is introduced by the UK’s leading designers and manufacturers of decon technology, Professional Protection Systems.

The smaller of the two units, which are officially described as Chemical and Biological Agents Isolation Systems can be made ready for use in just two minutes. The new units have been introduced, according to PPS Managing Director, Mark Whitcher to enable the private sector to make anti-terrorist incident provision for employees. “More and more companies are becoming aware of the danger” says Whitcher, “and also that they have a duty of care to their employees but until now there was nothing available with which they could fulfil that duty”.

Staff Shelter

These new PPS units represent a radical departure from PPS’s inflatable decontamination products in that they are mechanical and work on a patented articulating frame technology sourced in the USA. The shelter canopy is UV stabilised, fire retardant and chemical resistant. The key to the whole system is an air filtration system designed to remove toxic chemicals, biological agents and other harmful airborne particulates, including smoke.

The larger unit can be deployed in five minutes , works on the same principle as the smaller unit but is suitable for exterior as well as interior applications. Both units are modular and can be connected , in the case of the smaller unit, to existing rooms within a building or to other shelters similarly constructed.

The smaller shelter is 1.37m L x 1.52m W(internal). It weights less than 20.4 kg and folds up into a 61 cm3 x 31cm3 x 76.2 cm3 storage cube. The larger units is 2.74m W x 5.48m L (internal). It weighs less than 58kgs and folds up intro a 96.5cm x 71.1cm x 81.12 cm storage cube.
