According to Mark Whitcher, Director and General
Manager of PPS, this is the largest single contract for decontamination
technology ever placed in the UK and is part of a £5,000,000 government
programme to update the nation’s civil emergency response capability.
PPS has already enjoyed considerable success in supplying hospitals and
emergency services throughout the world, including the USA and Japan, with
its unique range of inflatable decontamination showers, but this is the
first major contract the company has landed in its own domestic market.
“I was beginning to think a – prophets not being recognised
in their own country – kind of thing” says Whitcher “but
I was thankfully proven wrong and we are delighted and proud to have been
chosen from stiff European competition”. The new UK unit, designated the DECAS NHS, has been tested and approved by the Nation Health Service Purchasing and Supply Agency. It has been designed to provide rapid decontamination of ambulant or stretcher bound casualties at the scene of an incident. The equipment includes two trigger operated hand held shower heads. Stored in a 0.8cu.m carry bag and weighing about 39Kg DECAS NHS inflates in moments into an impressive 2.9m long x 2.9m wide x 2.1m high decontamination shower system capable of handling a stretcher bound casualty and two ambulant casualties with paramedic assistance. Separate entry and exit doors minimise the chances of cross contamination of casualties and emergency services personnel and all containment is retained within the unit ready for environmental safe disposal. This has been designed in such a way that the unit itself does not have to be decontaminated but requires only re-lining in readiness for the next incident. How Innovation Impressed the NHS PPS always prides itself on going the extra mile for its customers, on making just that little more effort than the next company. It was this philosophy that contributed not a little to the winning of the valuable NHS contract. PPS had the idea of manufacturing a small scale version of the DECAS NHS that could be produced, so to speak, like a rabbit from a conjurer’s hat at the presentation to the contract committee. The effect was dramatic and it also gave the committee a three dimensional preview of the concept. |
