| Safety and Decontamination Showers - a radical rethink PPS to Market New German Partner’s Range Best known as the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of highly mobile terrorist response mass and individual decontamination systems Professional Protection Systems announce a radical rethink of the design of the traditional plumbed-in safety and decontamination shower undertaken by its new German partner, FSP-Tech. The new range is the result of carefully listening to users. “In this range what we were looking for were the blank spots and the weaknesses which are present in any design. We believe we have come up with solutions that address the problems our joint research with FSP-Tech uncovered” he said. For one thing the new FSP-Tech range is of all stainless steel construction as standard. Other manufacturers use mainly galvanised steel and when they did use stainless steel, at an additional cost, the profile was some 10 mm thinner than this new range favours. Another familiar design problem addressed by the FSP-Tech range is that protecting the heater from overheating requires that it has always been covered in water. In the conventional unit this means that a significant volume of the tank is wasted in achieving this and there is always a significant area that never gets clean. The FSP-Tech solution has been to engineer a small tank into the main tank, thus taking care of this problem. With an eye on durability the emphasis of the FSP-Tech / PPS rethink has been on a return to traditional materials. Besides stainless steel, brass instead of plastic is being used for valves and pipe work. “The problem with plastics, particularly when they are used in an industrial situation is that they degrade and become friable very quickly. You simply don’t have that problem with traditional materials” Improving water quality was another challenge addressed by FSP-Tech. It was realised that traditional shower units of this kind, given the conventional tank design, never realised a complete water change. This has now been overcome by the simple expedient of designing an outlet hole into the tank bottom. Similar attention has been paid to the heaters. Many manufacturers favour heaters with short heating rods. The new FSP-Tech range on the other hand has specified as standard a unit with long heating rods on the grounds that it provides a more constant heat emission and a longer life span for the heater unit itself. PPS admits that in design terms the FSP-Tech units don’t look much different from the conventional but the important thing, he says, is the quality, longevity and performance of the product. “If you consider those factors then we have engineered something of great added value” he concluded.
