Powered Air Respirator Suit Brings New Dimension To AF Operations

A Powered Air respirator suit has been developed by Professional Protection Systems; best known as one of the world’s leading suppliers to the Nuclear Industry of Air Fed PPE solutions and a leader in the Air Fed suit market.

The company’s Managing Director, Mark Whitcher, says that this latest addition to the PPS suit range, designated the PR
( powered respirator) suit will add a new dimension to air fed operations. “Although as a company we probably know more than most about air fed suits and have over 50 years experience in producing them, we discussed all options in development with BNG Sellafield operatives and key safety personnel to remove all our pre-conceptions and rethink our whole approach when we put our PR suit on the drawing board. The most important part of this process was talking to and spending many hours with the users and procurement and development employees of BNG and also communications with our customers in the pharmaceutical, process, petro-chemical and nuclear industries about what they wanted from a suit of this kind. Our PR suit is proving to be the answer.”
Powered Air Suits

Designed as a one-use disposable product the PR will be available in a variety of materials to suit both cost and operational requirements. The two main material options recommended by PPS at this stage are 0.300mm Natural PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) and 0.300mm natural PU (Polyurethane).

This new suit has been designed around a Scot Proflow 2 powered respirator system which PPS believe to be the best unit available. This unit meets the requirements of EN 12941/EN 12942. The 160 litre unit will supply filtered air to a PR suit user via a half or a full-face mask. A revolutionary PPS-designed assembly allows the suit to be connected to the blower with additional P3 filtration on the outside of the suit. This prevents it from becoming contaminated whilst a locking system holds suit filters to blower filters. This process allows safe donning and doffing of the garment without any risk to the safety or contamination of the user in removal of the garment.

Another feature is a radically redesigned hood that is fitted with new visor material giving superior all round vision, with the back being manufactured in natural PVC to reduce reflection. All other improvements in the crotch area , valve exhaust and glove and feet terminations have been addressed to suit the requiremenst of the users themselves.
