Surge In Training Brings “Rogue” Liner Alert
PPS Warning About Non-Standard Equipment

The recent dramatic increase in training being carried out in decontamination procedures by fire and ambulance services and within the health service generally has led to a warning from leading decontamination equipment manufacturer, Professional Protection Systems, to those in charge of training to ensure that standard equipment is used.

Particularly important, where exercises are planned in connection with decontamination showers, is firstly that Trusts and Hospitals know the training liner is available instead of soiling the relatively expensive CBRN liner and secondly to ensure that only the manufacturer’s training liner is used. The function of the liner is to protect the shower unit from decontamination so it must fit perfectly and be made of the right material.

According to PPS Managing Director Mark Whitcher there have been a number of occasions drawn to PPS’s attention in which a rogue liner has been used. “We only know about these incidents because using these rogue liners has resulted in damage to the inflatable unit which has caused us to be called in” he said. “Using one of these non-standard units does cause problems and in the event of it doing any serious damage it can invalidate the warranty on a unit”.

The problems resulting from using rogue liners are caused by a combination of the incorrect configurations to which they are finished and the substandard and inappropriate materials from which they are made, in most cases sub-standard PVC. All PPS liners are made from Kappler DuraVent®, which is a multi-layer fabric containing micro porous film and one or more layers (according to strength specified) of soft polypropylene. It is a material much used for car and other outdoor covers and ideal for the training function as it is durable, lightweight and has been officially approved as part of ongoing contract developments.
