PPS SERVICES... CBRN PRACTITIONER TRAINING - course content THE DECONTAMINATION TEAM It is vital that all members of the decontamination team are aware of their role and responsibilities whilst involved in an incident. This will ensure safe and efficient management of the mobile decontamination unit. The course breaks the team into individual members and outlines their duties within the decontamination process. ZONES The zones at a CBRN incident are determined by the levels of and their vicinity to contaminant. They are dynamic in nature and team members have to be sure how to identify them and the implications of being in a particular zone. Different zones may require particular safety precautions and equipment which is a key learning area. |

| COMMUNICATION Personal protective equipment ensures safety at the scene of an incident; however it does compromise the ability to communicate internally within the team and externally to other support teams. Students are taught a number of basic and universally understood hand signals to allow a constant flow of information which is necessary for a successful decontamination process. POSITIONING THE MDU (MOBILE DECONTAMINATION UNIT) Positioning an MDU is one of the most important aspects of the scene management. It also has many implications that affect safety and the overall efficiency of the incident. The delegates are taught basic principles to assist them when selecting an appropriate site prior to erection of the unit. MDU COMPONENTS The MDU is made up of a number of individual pieces of equipment each with specific placement, usage and monitoring requirements whilst being utilised within an incident. Team members are required to identify each piece and appropriately utilise it in the decontamination process. ERECTING THE MDU (MOBILE DECONTAMINATION UNIT) When a suitable site has been identified for the placement of the MDU the students are led through the process of erecting the tent and subsequently positioning and connecting the supplementary equipment. This requires the whole team to work together with a leader identified to oversee the process. There is a logical and sequential order of events which ensure efficiency and safety of the MDU set up. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) The suits are designed to protect the wearers against CBRN agents. Each suit has a number of components that need to be fully understood by all team members for reasons of safety. The teaching sessions demonstrate a “pre suiting up” check of equipment and component familiarisation. PPE SUITING UP All team members partake in practical exercises to give them confidence in their safety equipment. This includes donning the suit, calibrating respirators and attaching filters. This is also an opportunity for a nominated team leader to undertake “pre warm zone” entry safety checks and begin hand signal communication practices. CASUALTY DECONTAMINATION The processes of emergency decontamination and full casualty decontamination are demonstrated with active student involvement. This part of the course simulates the whole course of events from presentation of ambulant and non ambulant patients through to clean casualty entering the cold zone. This gives the team the opportunity to put all aspects of the training into practice in a scenario setting. POST INCIDENT PROCEDURES When all casualties have been successfully decontaminated the team need to be cleaned and disrobed appropriately. Following this the whole range of equipment within the MDU needs to be packed away ready for future use in a logical and sequential way. Their needs to be a liaison with support agencies who can take responsibility for effluent disposal and any contaminated sundries.
